Young Teens to Recognize MLK Day
Learning to be Better Babysitters

Students Among First to Learn New Safe Sitter® Curriculum

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. encouraged everyone to participate in civic life as much as possible. So, a fitting way to honor him is to use the day to give back to the community.

On MLK Day, a group of young teens will spend their day off from school in a hospital classroom learning how they  can make a positive contribution to their communities by being good babysitters. Since injuries are the leading cause of death in children up to age 5, today's babysitters need to know more than just the basics of child care.

The teens will spend from 9 am to 4 pm on January 16th being the first to learn the new Safe Sitter® 1-day with CPR class at Riley Hospital for Children in downtown Indianapolis. Safe Sitter, Inc., the national not-for-profit babysitting training program, is headquartered in Indianapolis.

The new curriculum includes a convenient "1-day with CPR & choking rescue" course option that follows the most current American Heart Association standards for rescue skills. Additionally, it provides young teens with instruction in the latest first aid techniques from the American Academy of Pediatrics. It has been updated with a modern, hip flair and includes babysitting training and more.

"Today's young teens and their parents have so many competing interests. By offering the new 1-day with CPR course option, more babysitters will be able to learn life-saving skills which, in turn, make safer communities," said Safe Sitter® Executive Director Sally Herrholz.

"This group of teens will be the first to learn the new curriculum and it's very gratifying to think that, with each succeeding Safe Sitter® class, the number of adolescents trained to recognize life-threatening emergencies will increase," Herrholz adds.

Along with life and safety skills, such as behavior management, emergency preparedness and first aid, students are also introduced to beginning business and marketing skills.
