Safe Sitter® receives many outstanding nominations for Safe
Sitter® of the Year. While only rescues performed in actual
babysitting situations qualify for Safe Sitter® of the Year, Safe
Sitter® would like to recognize all graduates who use skills
learned in a Safe Sitter® class to save a life. Unless you are at
least 13 years old, please ask your parent/guardian for permission
to contact us if you used your Safe
Sitter® skills to save a life. Congratulations to our heroes!

Sometimes, timing really is
everything.
If Kaitlyn, 11, had waited to take Safe Sitter® just a bit later, she wouldn't have been armed with the skills needed to save her sister when she did.
Kaitlyn completed the class at her local hospital in this past July. Just a mere two weeks later, she used what she'd learned to rescue her 7-year-old sister Caroline from choking on gumbo.
As the two sisters sat in the living room, Kaitlyn looked over and saw Caroline with her hands to her throat. Kaitlyn, who hadn't even had a chance to babysit since completing Safe Sitter®, knew exactly what was happening and what had to be done.
"I saw Caroline was using the choking sign I learned in Safe Sitter®. She wasn't able to talk to me and I knew she was choking," Kaitlyn said. "I was scared but I knew I needed to stay calm to help her. I told myself, 'You have to do this!'"
Kaitlyn did abdominal thrusts until meat popped out of Caroline's mouth. After making sure her younger sister was breathing, Kaitlyn ran into the kitchen to get their mother.
"Kaitlyn told me, 'I have everything under control' but I was so shocked that I had to take my heart medication!" said their mother, who added that Caroline's face looked so ashen it was clear that, had something not been done, a real tragedy may have occurred.
Caroline was grateful that her sister saved her life. And Kaitlyn was grateful for Safe Sitter®. "Caroline kept thanking me for saving her life," said Kaitlyn. "I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't taken Safe Sitter®!"
Safe Sitter® grads and sisters Elaine and Tiffany are true
to their name. They're so close that they worked together to save a
life. That work led them to be named Safe Sitters of the
Year!
