"I Felt Like a Hero!"

After saving her 6-year-old sister who was choking on a hard peppermint candy, Arica, 15, said she felt like a hero! Everyone agrees that Arica is a hero - especially Alydia, her sister!

"We were in my bedroom and I was dancing with our 9-year-old cousin," said Arica. "Alydia had been coloring and she got up to dance with us. I noticed that Alydia was waving her arms trying to get our attention. She was unable to talk and looked like she was trying to gag. I did the Heimlich Maneuver 3 times and then I picked her up and carried her downstairs to the kitchen. Our dad was in the basement so I yelled for him. I did the Heimlich several more times and the candy popped out! Then she threw up! Our dad came up just after Alydia threw up."

Arica had taken Safe Sitter® 3 years earlier at a local school sponsored by her local hospital in Indiana. Arica said she knew what to do when Alydia choked because she had learned it in class.  "I was shaking but I thought, 'I just saved her!'  I felt like a hero!"
