Sitter Takes Learning
to Heart
Ashley, 11, took to heart what she learned – and
remembered – in her Safe Sitter® class to save her two-year-old cousin, Jada,
who was choking on hard candy. Ashley took Safe Sitter® at her local
hospital where her grandmother, Emma, was one of her Instructors.
“Jada got the candy while I was getting her a
drink,” said Ashley. “She started coughing at first and then made a
gasping sound. Then I could tell she wasn’t breathing. I did the
Heimlich Maneuver a few times and the candy flew out of her mouth!
Then she threw up!”
Ashley credits her Safe Sitter® class with the
knowledge of what to do. “It was fun and already special having my
Grandma teach it, but I’m so glad I learned the Heimlich Maneuver,” said
Ashley. Her grandmother agrees. “She is a joy to all and we are
very proud of her,” said Emma.
